Drei Jahre vor Native Son. 1940, kam John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men, 1937, auf den Markt. Dort gibt es in der Grundkonzeption eine verblüffende Übereinstimmung. Lennie Small, ein geistig zurückgebliebener Farmarbeiter, und damit ein durchaus ähnlicher Außenseiter wie Bigger Thomas, tötet unbeabsichtigt in Panik eine weiße Frau. Traum: eigene Ranch; sein Freund George beschreibt: "Some day—we're gonna get the jack together and we're gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an' a cow and some pigs and ..."	Traum: Pilot; sein Freund Gus klärt ihn auf: "If you wasn't black and if you had some money and if they'd let you go to that aviation school, you could fly a plane" (20). Keine der drei Bedingungen trifft zu.
Beide suchen einen Job und finden Arbeit in einem für ihre Umgebung und ihren sozialen Stand typischen Job, aber mit Arbeitgebern aus einer höheren, für sie unerreichbaren Besitzerschicht.

Beide scheitern an der Anbiederung einer Frau aus der höheren sozialen Schicht zu der es von ihrem Status aus keine Brücke gibt; beide überspringen nicht freiwillig die Kluft, sie werden von den Frauen gezogen.
"Lennie was in a panic. His face was contorted. She screamed then, and Lennie's other hand closed over her mouth and nose." ... "»I don't want you to yell. You gonna get me in trouble jus' like George says you will.«"	"He felt Mary trying to rise and quickly he pushed her head back to the pillow." ... "Mary mumbled and tried to rise again. Frantically, he caught a corner of the pillow and brought it to her lips. He had to stop her from mumbling, or he would be caught."
