Shirley Jackson hat in der literarischen Welt eine eigentümliche Stellung. Während ihre Kurzgeschichte "The Lottery" in vielen Anthologien auftaucht und anscheinend in US-Schulen häufig thematisiert wird, findet sich ihr Name (nicht einmal ihr Name!) in keiner der von mir überprüften Literaturgeschichten, sei es Hubert Zapf: Amerikanische Literaturgeschichte oder Paul Lauter, Hg.: The Heath Anthology of American Literature Vol. 2. oder Arthur H. Bell, Donald W. Heiney, Lenthiel H. Downs, Hg.: American Literature: 1930 to the Present.
Ich meine: eine krasse Unterschätzung und Schieflage.

Mit nur 45 Jahren starb sie am 8. August 1965.
