Howard Phillips Lovecraft (20. August 1890 Providence, Rhode Island – 15. März 1937 Providence, Rhode Island) begründete 1925 in seinem Essay Supernatural Horror in Literature den Ausdruck »cosmic horror« als die Angst vor dem Unbekannten. Er beginnt mit:
„The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown“ (S. 12).
Nach einem Bedeutungswandel ist der »cosmic horror« im engeren Sinne die Angst vor Kräften, die man nicht von dieser Welt vermutet, die in ihrem Ursprung aber meist unerkannt bleiben, also die Angst vor dem Unbekannten und auch Unbegreiflichen. Oder präziser: ein böses, für uns unfassbares ko-existierendes Universum / Jenseits greift ins irdische Geschehen ein.
Klassisches Beispiel dafür ist die Erzählung "The Willows" ("Die Weiden") von Algernon Blackwood von 1907. H. P. Lovecraft sah sich selbst beim »cosmic horror« in der Nachfolge von Edgar Allan Poe, Ambroce Bierce, Algernon Blackwood, Arthur Machen und Lord Dunsany.
